ICEBERG EXPERIMENT



  • Preparation at home:
·         Fill a tetra pack or a balloon with salt water. Tie the end of the balloon to seal the water inside. This will be the iceberg.
·         Put the balloon inside a plastic bag and leave the bag in the freezer overnight or 24 hours.

  • EXPERIMENT
Procedure:
1.  Fill a tall, transparent container  with fresh (tap) water.









2.  Add two tablespoons of salt to the water. This will be the ocean.



3. Remove the balloon from the freezer and use the scissors to carefully cut away the balloon.
4. Put the iceberg in a tall, transparent container filled with fresh (tap) water and observe. 



Observation number 1: (You will need a ruler)
a)      Use the ruler to measure how much ice is above the water line.
Measure from the water line to the highest part of the ice. 
Note down the measurement________________

b)      Now measure how much ice is below the water line.
Measure from the water line to the lowest part of the ice. 
Note down the measurement_________________

HOMEWORK:
1)      Which part of the iceberg is bigger: the part above the water line or the part below?
